A smart building starts at the entrance

The entrance to a house, apartment building or commercial space is a place of everyday communication and decisions: who has arrived, whom to let in and how to grant access when nobody is on site. A well-chosen video door station makes these tasks easier while fitting in with the architecture and the way the space is used.

DoorBird combines video calls, communication with visitors and access management over an IP network. Another advantage is its ability to connect with other systems, which allows the door station to become an integral part of a smart home or commercial building.

An eye on the entrance even when you are away

When a visitor rings, DoorBird lets you take the call on your smartphone or tablet. With a suitable internet connection, you can see who is at the door, talk to the visitor and, if the system is connected to a suitable lock or drive, open the door or the gate.

This is handy when you want to give instructions to a courier, greet a guest while you are in the garden or answer a call when you are out of the office. Depending on the configuration, the system can also be used with an indoor station, giving household members or employees a fixed place to answer calls. Available functions depend on the selected model and equipment.

Access control tailored to users

Different buildings require different entry rules. For a family home simplicity matters most, for a commercial space the allocation of permissions, and for an apartment building a clear way of calling residents.

The DoorBird range includes solutions with different identification methods, including keypad, RFID and fingerprint reader, depending on the model. On supported devices, time-based access restrictions can be set, for example for someone who comes to maintain the property at an agreed time. This way, the method of entry can be matched to users’ actual needs.

Before choosing, it is therefore worth establishing how many people will use the system, how many entrances need to be controlled and who will manage user permissions.

Integration with the smart home and KNX

The value of a connected entrance really comes to the fore when it is coordinated with the rest of the building. Showing visitors on a control screen, linking with video surveillance or triggering a predefined action can simplify everyday use.

DoorBird offers partner integrations and an API for connecting with other systems. Integration into a KNX environment is achieved through compatible gateway solutions, servers or visualisation, after checking which functions are supported. It is important to define in advance what the user wants to achieve and to choose equipment that can deliver it.

This approach allows the video door station to be part of a jointly designed building control system.

Design that blends into the architecture

The door station is a permanently visible part of the façade, fence or entrance area. Its dimensions, mounting method and finish are therefore just as important as its functions.

DoorBird offers various materials and surface finishes, including stainless steel, PVD finishes and RAL colours, depending on the version. This makes it easier to match the door, façade, house number and other entrance details.

When choosing, on-site conditions should also be considered: exposure to the weather, camera position, lighting and a mounting height suited to the users.

Reliability starts with good design

Choosing the device alone is not enough for a good result. The network connection, power supply, connection to the lock or door drive and the location of additional control modules all need to be planned.

On models that support PoE, a single network cable carries both data and power, which can simplify installation. For certain renovations, solutions are also available that carry the network connection over existing two-wire cabling, with suitable converters and a check of the installation conditions.

Documented settings, clearly assigned permissions and the option of service access are just as important. This keeps the system understandable and easier to maintain after the initial installation.

DoorBird as part of a complete Amplituda solution

For a project with Amplituda, the starting point is your habits and the requirements of the building: do you want to answer calls on your mobile phone, have an indoor station, several ways to unlock the door, or integration with KNX visualisation and other systems?

Based on these needs, the door station, infrastructure and required functions are defined. The goal is simple everyday use, a coordinated look and a system that can be maintained and adapted to future needs.
